Police have issued a warning after two men tried to get into the car of an off-duty policewoman driving alone through a village.
The woman was stopped in Maypole Road, Tiptree, at about 11pm last night. The two men asked for a lift, claiming there was a horse on the loose they needed to catch.
They tried to get in the car but the quick-thinking Maldon police officer quickly secured the car before making her escape. It was described as a "frightening experience" for her. Police suspect the pair could have wanted to carry out a sex attack or steal the car.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester CID, said: "We don't know what the motive was but the first thing you think of is a sexual motive or that they wanted to steal the car.
The men were described as having Irish accents and large builds. Anyone with information should call police on 01206 762212.
