A parish councillor has slammed plans to reduce a bus service and replace current buses with older models.

From July 25, the number 14 service from Great Wakering to Southend will no longer go as far as the hospital, but will end at the town centre instead, following a review by Arriva.

The bus operator will also replace its current buses with older models in the next two to three months in a bid to cut costs without having to further reduce the number of services in the Southend area.

A parish councillor for Great Wakering has criticised the plans, saying bus services are already a problem in the village.

Ann Wright, parish councillor for the west ward, said: "There is a lot of distress locally because of the lack of bus services. There is also the problem of buses stopping early in the evening."

A spokesperson for Arriva said the 14 service was hardly being used as it took a circuitous route. She said the older buses coming in were "up to the company's standards".
