The developers behind Bathside Bay are prepared to pay up to £49million to improve the A120.
Hutchison Ports UK (HPUK), which wants to build the deep-sea container terminal, yesterday stated its intention to cover whatever costs are required.
The £49million figure was an estimate from 2002 for dualling the whole stretch of road from the A12 to Harwich.
Paul Davey, a spokesman for Hutchison, told the Evening Gazette: "We are happy to pay for and accommodate the changes that are necessary for Bathside Bay.
"If a study indicated that dualling was necessary, then so be it. But it is not our expectation that the whole of it should be dualled."
