It was a case of Summers coming late at Priory Park yesterday as the pairs competition was played up to the quarter-final stages at the Southend Men's Open Bowls Tournament.

Father and son Cliff and Alan Summers, two thirds of last week's beaten triples finalists, took on Rochford clubmate John Welton in the third round.

The Summers looked on the way out when 16-9 down on 15 ends, but picked up 14 shots to three on the last six for a 23-19 success.

In better weather the Summers pairing strolled through to the quarter-finals in the afternoon with a 25-16 success over Thorpe Bay's W Dick and K Williams.
