Reserve rider Paul Hurry was the star man as Arena Essex enjoyed a 53-41 Elite League win at home to Coventry.
Hurry mustered three heat wins from his six rides to return 13 points and with Mark Loram also posting 13 points, the Hammers were able to take a useful advantage into tonight's return fixture in the Midlands.
Without the injured Kelvin Tatum, Arena utilised the rider replacement facility that provided seven points but with the two home reserves outscoring their opposite numbers 19-2, the loss of the Hammers skipper was comfortably overcome.
Promoter Ronnie Russell reflected: "Although Coventry are at the foot of the table, we knew it would not be an easy meeting. Without Kelvin Tatum, it was essential that all of our riders chipped in to support Mark Loram and everything went to plan with Paul Hurry coming up trumps at reserve."
