Dedicated fundraisers are set to take on everything from swarms of midges to blisters when they set off on a 100-mile walk.

The Benfleet-based Victor Meldrews team are hoping their eight-day trek in Scotland will raise £500 for the Benfleet branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

The challenge is to start on Wednesday, July 21. Group spokesman Peter Butters said: "We've been called the Victor Meldrews because our ages range from 52 to 62.

"I'm not much of a walker but when Peter Wiggans suggested this walk I said I'd be able to do it easily. Now I'm not so sure.

"The walk takes eight days and we will travel a maximum of 15 miles in any one day. The weather, midges and blisters will be our main stumbling blocks.

Mr Butters will be joined by friends Peter Wiggans, John Webb, Geoffrey Smith and Mike Allen.
