Plans to develop a Marks and Spencer furniture shop in Lakeside have been axed.

The Lifestore chain, nationally officially launched only five months ago, has been scrapped as part of a billion pound shake-up by new boss Stuart Rose.

The Lakeside Lifestore was due to open in the summer of next year and be on a separate site to the existing Marks and Spencer in the shopping centre.

The flagship Lifestore in Gateshead will close next year, with 190 staff losing their jobs. Mr Rose, in the post for six weeks, revealed his plan to revive the ailing retail giant, which include selling Marks and Spencer Money to HSBC for £762million.

A spokesperson from the company said no other stores in Essex are under threat of closure despite a further fall in sales.
