The Health and Safety Executive will be carrying out an investigation into the death of a construction worker at a Purfleet site.
The 24-year-old builder, believed to be from Europe, was killed during an industrial accident in London Road, at about 9am yesterday.
An ambulance spokesman told how the man was working in an eight-foot deep trench fitting pipes when a digger bucket fell on him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the digger and a witness to the accident were both treated for shock at the scene. Essex Police will liaise with the Health and Safety Executive which will investigate the incident.
A spokesman for Essex police said: "The death is not suspicious and we are treating it as an industrial accident. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and will lead the investigation and we will liaise with them. The man has some local relatives who have been informed of his death. The coroner has also been informed."
