Protesters opposed to a controversial annexe planned for a Maldon church have had the chance to inspect the finer details of the proposals.

Canon David Atkins, of All Saints' Church in High Street, says an information session on Saturday saw many local people turn up to the church to get the lowdown on the plans.

He said: 'I thought it was really successful. There were a few people whose opinions will never be swayed, but I think most realised what we are trying to achieve.'

There has been widespread opposition to the proposed annexe, with some protesters branding it a 'carbuncle' and claiming it will ruin the appearance of the ancient church.

The official application for planning permission has been submitted to Maldon District Council. The last chance for representations is July 23.

There will be another chance for anyone interested in the project to chat to Canon Atkins and members of the Parochial Church Council on Saturday, between 9.30am and 12.30pm
