A decision on the future of Billericay's Second World War memorial may not be made until next year, it has been revealed.
Billericay Town Council was forced to temporarily shelve plans to renovate the memorial, at the junction of Chapel Street and the High Street, after the memorial was given Grade II listed building status by the Government last week.
As a result, the town council will now have to submit a new listed building application if it wants to go ahead with the plans, which would see the Second World War memorial rebuilt.
While the plans have been backed by many local residents, some campaigners have called for the existing memorial to be renovated rather than replaced. The campaigners' claims have been backed by the prestigious Friends of War Memorials' organisation.
