Adam Hickey's latest sporting triumph has gained him international recognition.

The 16-year-old Southend High School for Boys pupil produced a scintillating performance at Gateshead International Stadium to win the intermediate boys' 3000m crown at the English Schools' Championships.

Hickey, a member of Southend Athletic Club who, apart from his athletics prowess, also excels in the sports of swimming and triathlon, has been named in the England team for the coming weekend's home international schools clash against Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Hickey, 16, admitted to being delighted with his triumph in the north-east as his winning time of 8 mins 30.39 secs was eight seconds better than he'd ever previously posted.

He said: "For once I decided to pace myself - and it worked. Robert Pickering set off really fast, but I gradually caught him and was able to ease away from him in the closing stages to win by a second."
