Campaigners will step up their fight to dual the A120 after reflecting on alarming new figures.

A survey carried out at the end of June found that the volume of traffic was 30 per cent greater than the estimate made by the Highways Agency.

A petition is now going to be organised, while another traffic survey is due for September to coincide with the opening of the Harwich Gateway Retail Park.

Speaking at last night's meeting of Ramsey and Parkeston Parish Council, John Brown told members that the figures proved action had to be taken.

He said: "How much longer do we need to wait to have a suitable trunk road servicing a major port like Harwich International?

Councillor Fraser Leeks, speaking about traffic through Ramsey, said: "It's like a racetrack and must be addressed it's a waiting deathtrap."
