A son is demanding to know how his mother contracted a strain of "superbug" MRSA.

Nora Thompson, of Medway Avenue, Witham, was admitted to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, on June 21 with breathing problems and blisters on her legs.

The 72-year-old, who suffers from asthma, caught pneumonia while at the hospital. She was moved into intensive care where it is thought she picked up MRSA. A spokesman for the hospital confirmed Nora Thompson had contracted a strain of the MRSA bacteria.

As a campaign to stamp out the illness in hospitals nationally has been announced, her son, Paul Thompson, 39, of Douglas Grove, Witham, said: "I've phoned up the head man, Andrew Pike, chief executive of Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust, to make an appointment.

"I was told he was busy and that he wanted to find out the facts. It's been 20 days without a response."

A Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust spokesman said: "It is not the policy of Mr Pike to discuss individual cases. He would leave it to those with knowledge of the case. There is a system in place to deal with complaints."
