A teenage girl has died after the motorbike her father was riding was involved in a collision with a car.

The 15-year-old from the Tendring area, who was riding as a pillion passenger on the black Honda bike, was certified dead at the scene after the accident in Mersea Road, Colchester, at just after 8pm last night.

She is the 13th person to die after an accident involving a motorcycle in Essex this year. Her father, aged 39, is in Colchester General Hospital this morning with serious leg injuries.

The bike was involved in a collision with a green Land Rover Freelander on the road, near to Weir Lane. The driver of the car was said to be shocked but otherwise unhurt today.

A police spokesman said the father and daughter were from the Tendring area and are believed to have been travelling from Colchester towards Mersea. The driver of the Land Rover is from Chelmsford.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard the motorcycle prior to the crash, and are particularly keen to hear from the driver of another motorcycle, which is thought to have overtaken the Honda just before the accident. Phone 01206 762512.
