Corringham based Paralympion Danny Crates smashed his own world 800m record at the AAAs championships in Manchester at the weekend.
The 31-year-old, who won bronze at the 2000 Sydney Games, bettered his previous best with a time of 1.53.27mins to finish seventh competing against able bodied athletes.
He said: "It hurt a lot. The pace was so much quicker and took its toll."
Crates is now gunning for gold in Athens and said there was a lot more to come from him. "My training was not really geared to this race," he added.
"So there is definitely more to come."
