The devastated brother of a motorcyclist injured in a serious accident at the weekend have called for greater road safety.

The 28-year-old male rider, from Shotgate, is being treated at a specialist hospital in west London after the crash on Canvey Way, in Benfleet, on Saturday morning.

His 25-year-old girlfriend, whose name has also not been released, was thrown from the motorbike after colliding with a car and is in a critical but stable condition at Basildon Hospital.

Richard Sharp, the driver's older brother, said the accident "has left the whole family in pieces" and also shocked the local biking community.

The accident comes just seven months after the motorcyclist's best friend, Darren Hills, 28, was killed in a motorcycle accident at East Mayne in Basildon.

Richard, 32, from Basildon, said: "None of us can believe this has happened so soon after the accident with Darren."
