So far, so good. The first peak period following the closure of the Ipswich rail tunnel appears to have gone off without a hitch.
Traffic on the A137 at Lawford and Brantham was running smoothly yesterday morning on the first day without trains between Ipswich and Manningtree stations.
In fact, there seemed to be fewer vehicles, with motorists who often use the road as a short cut possibly having decided to stick to the A12.
The tunnel will be closed for eight weeks for the lines to be lowered to enable the larger freight containers to pass through, and a temporary car park has been built at Manningtree.
Buses are operating between the two stations but some commuters were prepared to pay the £10 charge to use the new car park, which was almost full by 8am.
