Police cordoned off a road for two hours while a bomb disposal unit was called in to investigate a metal object dug up in a back garden.

It turned out to be a harmless imitation grenade. Officers blocked off St Bennet's Road, Westcliff, at about 4pm yesterday.
A police spokesman said: "The resident who found the object did the right thing in calling us, even though it was a false alarm."
