Southend Council is stepping up its recycling efforts after the Government set new targets for the borough.
The Government has set the following targets: recycle or compost at least 25 per cent of household waste by 2005, at least 30 per cent by 2010, and at least 33 per cent by 2015.
This is in order to comply with the European Union Environmental legislation.
Karen Grant, the council's waste management technician, said: "We have been set demanding targets and this has all been considered within the new waste management strategy.
"We are also promoting numerous initiatives - the Don't Rubbish Essex campaign, Schools Waste Action Club, and working on a waste contract to deliver the strategy."
Councillor Ann Holland, executive councillor for Environmental and Public Protection, said: "The council will need to reduce reliance on landfill."
