Essex lost by 54 runs at Warwickshire yesterday in their Totesport League match, leaving them stuck in the First Division relegation zone having been set a 224 score for victory.
Brad Hogg caused the visitors' undoing, returning figures of 5-23 in his nine overs, yet at one stage Essex appeared to be on a winning course as they reflected on a score of 93-2 in the 15th over.
But the introduction of left-arm wrist spinner Hogg into the attack to bowl in tandem with Ian Bell turned the game as the Australian found a variety of deliveries on a demanding length to sweep away Essex's challenge.
The combination stemmed the flow of runs conceding just 20 in 10 overs to apply pressure on their opponents, who wilted to show up brittleness in batting approach.
