A man who suffers from cerebral palsy today told how three men tricked their way into his home claiming they were from the water board.
The 61-year-old, who does not want to be named but lives in Weeley, said although they went through a number of rooms, nothing was stolen in the raid.
"I was in the kitchen with the back door open when a man came to the door," he said. "He claimed that he was going to flush the drains and needed to turn the stop cock off."
Det Con Steve Knight, of Clacton police, praised the victim for the way he handled the situation and challenged the men.
The three were all in their 20s and about 5ft 9ins tall with dark hair.
Mr Knight said residents should check for identification from any caller at their door. If in doubt, call the company they claim to be from and if you are still unsure contact the police.
Anyone with information that could help police is asked to contact Det Con Knight on 01255 221312.
