The first week of the Southend Men's Open Bowls Tournament culminated in two thrilling finals at Priory Park on Saturday - with Essex County's Kevin Watkins enjoying mixed fortunes.

In the morning he was pipped for the singles crown by Jack Crawford (Carreras).
But the afternoon triples final saw Watkins take the crown - even though he wasn't there.
For Watkins had been called away to represent Essex in their key Middleton Cup clash at Felixstowe and had to call clubmate Ian Gelgon in as a substitute lead for the Southend date.
