South-east Essex young athletes enjoyed a medal bonanza at the English Schools Track and Field Championships at Gateshead International Stadium.
They won four golds - one each for the four south-east Essex districts - and a plethora of silver and bronze prizes.
Leading the way with victories were Basildon's James Shane in the junior 1,500 metres, Southend sporting all-rounder Adam Hickey (intermediate 3,000m), Castle Point and Rochford's junior triple jumper Alex Neville and Thurrock senior javelin thrower Hayley Thomas.
Hickey's success again demonstrated the strength in depth of middle-distance running among his age group in the area.
