Hundreds of people lined the streets of Witham and blew whistles as this year's carnival procession came through town.

The weather held out for the procession, which this year organisers said was one of the best ever attended.

Included in the procession were majorettes, marching bands, Scouts and Guides, roller skaters, two fire engines, and carnival courts from towns across Essex.

The theme of this year's event was based around summer and winter Olympics because of the games due to be held in Greece.

The floats, marching bands and others set off for the procession from Freebournes Road at 1.30pm on Saturday.

They proceeded down Newland Street, where residents and visitors had been waiting to see them go by. Loud music was played from several floats which added to the carnival atmosphere.

The procession then moved along Bridge Street, Howbridge Road, Laurence Avenue and Maldon Road, before further festivities and fundraising events took place in Maldon Road park.

Claire Keyes, carnival committee member, said: "The sun shone and everyone made a huge effort to make the carnival very successful."
