Shop customers in Colchester should be getting a more polite service in the future thanks to a new scheme being set up in the town.

The Colchester Town Partnership has agreed to set up a training scheme for shop staff working in the town to improve customer service.

Nick Clarke, manager at the town's Debenhams store and chairman of the Colchester Retailers' Association, said it made good business sense to ensure staff had good manners.

He said the scheme would involve staff working in shops, restaurants and other services such as estate agents being sent for training sessions.

The scheme will not be compulsory and will be up to individual employers to send their staff, but Mr Clarke said it would benefit those who took part.

"What we will do is set up a simple customer service training certificate," he said. "It will be good for business and good for customers."
