Teachers at a Basildon primary school are refusing to teach a nine-year-old boy after a colleague was suspended for allegedly assaulting him.

Jordon Pithers has not joined his classmates at Phoenix Primary School in Leinster Road, Laindon, for two weeks since his teacher Peggy Chapman was accused of grabbing him by the arm causing scratches.

It is also claimed the boy suffered a nose bleed in the alleged incident.

Miss Chapman, who has not been arrested, has been suspended while Rayleigh police child protection team investigates the claims.

The boy's mother Zena Pithers of Brendons, Laindon, said Jordon, who is having lessons with the deputy headteacher Christine Poole, feels as if he is being punished for "telling the truth".

An Essex County Council spokesman said: "We are aware of the allegations and that an investigation is under way.
