Ahmed Sheikh Jahid was shocked to be invited to prove his ability in front of England coaches.
The 18-year-old bowler, who is part of Peter Such's Essex Academy at The County Ground, has been given the chance to play for an ECB school of excellence south side against their northern counterparts in Loughborough later this month.
However, the right-arm seam bowler is taking it all in his stride and is ready to take his chance.
"It was a shock," he said. "I came home to find a letter from the ECB and I was wondering 'what on earth is that doing here?'
"I really wasn't expecting it, it was quite a surprise. However, I think with what the coaches have been teaching me I have the ability.
"I can't wait to get up there and do well and make sure the England coaches have a good look at me."
The rise to national recognition has been a swift one for Jahid.
He is only in his first season at Maldon and his third in total playing club cricket.
