Following Canvey's successful showing at the Southern Counties Youth Swimming Championships earlier in the summer, it was the turn of the island club's younger swimmers to show their potential.

Their stage of the Southern event saw seven of their swimmers aged between 10 and 14 years rack up 35 qualifying times - their highest ever.

Attracting swimmers from over 160 clubs from all over the south of England and London, the competition was among the toughest some Canvey members had encountered.

Phillippa Bennett (10) was the surprise of the championships, managing three finals from four events.

Although predominantly known for her breaststroke, Phillippa's best performance came in the 100m backstroke where a superb effort in the final saw her finish fifth - the club's higher placing overall.

Phillippa also had best times in three other events while team-mate Kerriann Chipperfield (10) qualified in five events overall and has a promising swimming career ahead of her after a great Essex Counties campaign.

Her best displays came in 100 and 200 butterfly where she finished sixth in both and she grabbed pb's in three other races.

Swimming in his second successive Southern Counties Championships, 11-year-old Jason Daniels qualified in seven events with his best showing coming in the 100 butterfly and backstroke.

His first final appearances at these championships saw Jason finish eighth overall in both events and swim well in the other five.
