Witham could be in line for a £500,000 cash boost for road improvements.

The Witham north junction, off the A12 near the Eastways industrial estate, could see traffic signals introduced.

A second initiative would mean the possible installation of mini-roundabouts at the junction of Maldon Road and Maltings Lane and near to Benton Hall Golf Club.

Essex County Council has set aside the amount for the current financial year and Witham is one of a number of projects vying for the money.

Ultimately, it will be the decision of Rodney Bass, Essex county councillor for transportation and highways, to see who gets the cash.

Keith Bigden (Con, Hatfield Peverel), said: "The Witham north junction could be undergoing traffic improvements. There would be a complete redesign of the area, which it has needed for a number of years."

Signalling of the entire area would take up a small proportion of the fund, with the rest scheduled to be spent on the redesign.
