Two pupils at Southend High School for Boys have created a unique record of being members of winning teams at the English Schools Track and Field Cup for four years in a row.

National glory - for the Greensward College junior boys

Daniel Chapman and Charles Dickson completed their moment of history at Gateshead International Stadium as Southend High, based in Prittlewell Chase, triumphed in the intermediate boys competition.

It was the second year running that Southend High had won this particular contest --straight after they'd won the junior boys for three seasons on the trot.

Southend High's head of PE Steve Thomas was quick to praise his young athletes:

He said: "No one can appear in this event for more than four times - twice with the juniors and twice with the intermediates - and Daniel and Charles are the first to achieve this feat in the competition's 25-year history.

"Certainly it's a record that can never be beaten - and it's certainly possible that it won't be equalled.

"It's an amazing feat and they can be very proud."

Competitors at Gateshead had to battle against thunder, lightning and rain to achieve success and the South-east Essex domination of the boys' event was complete when Hockley's Greensward College won the junior competition.
