Worries that South Woodham Ferrers' new swimming pool will be hijacked by local schools have been laid to rest.

The £4m new and improved sports centre, featuring the town's first public pool, is due to open after Christmas.

But at a meeting for people to air their views to Chelmsford Borough Council, which will run the centre, concerns were raised that swimming lessons for William de Ferrers School and primary schools would monopolise time slots.

However, council sport and recreation manager Jon Lyons said: "The final timetable has yet to be finalised but the steering committee has already decided schools will have a combined 12-hour allotment spread over the week during term time.

"The land for the pool and improved sports centre has been donated to the cause by the secondary school but will be for the use of everyone living in Woodham."
