Four phone boxes in Rochford will be removed after BT claimed they were unprofitable.

The rise in mobile phone use has been blamed for the axing of the payphones, which will leave only five in the district.

The phones which will be removed are in Hall Road, Stambridge Road, Sutton Road and Percy Cottis Road, Rochford.

Labour councillor Maureen Vince was worried people who did not own a mobile phone or have a line in their homes may have their means of communication cut.

BT blamed "a complete culture change in communications" for the cuts.
