Plans to demolish a pub to make way for a sheltered housing development have been given the go-ahead by Basildon Council.
The proposals, which will see the Burstead Plough, in Southend Road, South Green, replaced by a three-storey block of 31 flats, were voted through by the council's development control and traffic management committee.
Conditions of the approval will see the developers make a contribution of around £50,000 to improve a nearby pedestrian crossing and make a contribution to affordable housing in the Basildon district.
Richard Llewellyn (Lab, St Martins) said: "This type of application is desperately needed in this area and the district as a whole"
Frank Tomlin (Con, Laindon Park) added: "This would be a proper use of the land and it would be hard to find a better way of using it."
