In a bid to give Chelmsford City FC a financial boost, five fans are planning to visit the grounds of the Claret's 21 league rivals in a 24-hour non-stop road trip.

The team for tomorrow's 'Cannonball Run' is made up of three of the club's Fundraising Committee - Jon Read (committee chairman), Kev McCarthy and John White - and two of their friends, Gavin Brewer and Barry Rice.

The committee organise events throughout the year to help the club and according to Jon this one has caught the imagination.

He said: "It has really taken off, we've had so much money pledged by the fans. People have just come forward with donations.

"The trip starts at Cambridge City's ground at 2pm, from where the lads head for Grantham before making their way to the clubs around Birmingham.

They will then move on to Merthyr Tydfil in Wales, where they are to be met by a welcoming committee, before shooting through the West Country.

From there they will continue along the South coast before hopefully hitting the finish line at Billericay in time for Chelmsford's match against Tiverton

So far around £3000 has been raised, including money from the trip's main sponsor, former City chairman Peter Stroud's The Sports Academy.Hour by hour updates are available at www.members.boardhost.com/chelmsford and pledges can be sent to Jon Read, 14 Amcotes Place, Chelmsford, CM2 9HZ.
