A man was injured in a scuffle with youths after complaining about them hurling snowballs.
The victim suffered cuts and grazes in the attack, in Mersea Road, Colchester, at about 7pm on Wednesday, said police.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester CID, said: "They were probably throwing them at houses or people and he went out to complain."
