Police today praised drivers for their careful driving on Colchester's "treacherous" roads.
Officers at Stanway road policing unit were bracing themselves for the rush hour today as motorists made their way across icy roads.
More snow and black ice had left many roads perilous, but there had been no major crashes overnight.
A police spokesman praised drivers for taking heed of the conditions and using caution. There were no major incidents.
All major routes were clear this morning and minor routes were passable with care.
Last night saw much of Colchester in gridlock during the evening rush hour.
Police said a combination of drivers being cautious, two-lane carriageways being reduced to a single lane and a lot of people leaving work early, had stopped traffic.
