Castle Point MP Bob Spink held a reception at the House of Commons to look at new ways of tackling drug abuse.
Around 100 MPs and industry experts attended and heard Mr Spink explain improvements in the treatment of heroin.
Mr Spink said: "Heroin addicts are the source of a major proportion of crime in Essex. Each addict is estimated to obtain £80,000 a year through criminal activities to sustain their habit.
"I am promoting new and better ways to treat addicts and get them off the habit so that they can rejoin society and rebuild their lives. This will be a great benefit for all in the community."
