Castle Point MP Bob Spink has added his voice to growing criticism British forces were poorly equipped to fight in Iraq.
Speaking in the House of Commons, the Tory MP called for a debate on the lack of protective equipment provided to troops and support personnel.
Mr Spink said: "The failure to provide such equipment when and where it was needed was in large part a result of the delay by the Government in placing the relevant orders."
"Soldiers were sacrificed for the purposes of political appeasement by this discredited Government."
Commons leader Labour MP Peter Hain was incensed by Mr Spink's accusation.
He said: "That is the most outrageous allegation it is possible to make. Our soldiers form the most effective fighting machine in the world."
