Barstable School, in Timberlog Close, Basildon, has been highlighted in the Ofsted Annual Report 2002/03 for its significant improvement over the last school year.
The school has been removed from the restrictions of being on special measures because of the steady improvement it has made in the past year to 18 months.
The praise for Barstable came from David Bell, the chief inspector of schools for Ofted which inspects every school in the country.
Mr Bell said: "I congratulate the headteacher, staff, governors and pupils of this school for the significant progress that led to the removal of special measures.
"Thanks to strong leadership, dedicated staff and a positive commitment to tackling weaknesses head-on, pupils can look forward to a bright future."
Another school singled out for praise was St Mary's Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, in South Woodham Ferrers, which was named as an outstanding school.
