A town centre taxi rank should be closed and altered to make it safer before someone is run over, councillors have warned.
Concerns are mounting about the rank in Canvey High Street which is used by vehicles other than taxis as a short cut.
Some motorists have even forced pedestrians to leap for safety.
Castle Point Council's highways and leisure committee has received requests from taxi drivers for an overtaking facility to be built into the rank to improve public safety.
Yet Tory Canvey East councillor Shirley Coates went a step further and said the answer was either speed reduction or rank closure.
She said: "It is very dangerous.
"Other drivers, not taxi drivers, are using it illegally as a cut through.
"Until we have got it straight, it ought to be closed or have a 5mph speed limit put on it."
Castle Point director of technical services Nigel Thomas agreed speed restrictions were needed.
Discussions will get under way with police over installing an overtaking bay.
