A digger cut through a 6ft-high mud hill bordering the illegal site.
Travellers pelted evictors with rubble as they entered the site, in Cranham Road, Chelmsford.
Two evictors received minor injuries and had to be given first aid.
Forty Essex police officers trained to handle public disorders followed evictors on to the site. The evictors had been employed for the job by Chelmsford Council at a cost of £100,000.
