Shoppers in Hadleigh are facing a rise in car parking charges of at least 10p an hour as part of a scheme to generate thousands of pounds extra for Castle Point Council.
Rectory Road car park in Hadleigh, used by hundreds of motorists each day, will see its tariff increased from 20p to 30p for an hour. Parking for two hours will cost 50p and 80p for three.
Brian Shephard, Castle Point's car parks manager, said: "It is fair to assume that increasing the hourly rate would produce an additional £22,000 in a full year."
Charges at car parks in School Lane, Benfleet and Eastern Esplanade, Canvey, and Essex Way, Benfleet, are also expected to rise to raise more cash to plough into services.
Castle Point Council's Highways and Leisure committee will discuss the move at a meeting tonight.
