Commuters faced delays of up to 30 minutes on the trains this morning.
One of the new Class 360 trains travelling towards London suffered a mechanical failure just before Hatfield Peverel station at around 7.15am.
Chairman of the Witham and Braintree Rail Users Association, David Bigg, said at one point there were four London-bound trains waiting in Witham causing delays of around 30 minutes to those travelling in peak time.
A spokeswoman for First said they chose to leave the train on the track and use one line to move trains past it in both directions which caused 'significant' delays.
All commuters delayed will be entitled to claim compensation for the delay.
