Thurrock hopes of keeping close on the tail of second-placed Carshalton in the Ryman Premier were hit when they were held to a home draw by Basingstoke.
The home side's Paul Gothard and visiting counterpart Scott Tarr enjoyed outstanding performances on a day when both keepers captained their teams.
Tarr had to come from goal to head clear after 14 minutes and Gothard got into the action by using his legs to keep out a Craig McAllister effort.
Ex-Canvey man Craig Davidson, a second-half substitute for Terry Bowes, tested Tarr, but the home side badly missed strikers Cliff Akurang and Tresor Kandol.
