The streets of Billericay could be alcohol-free within a matter of weeks.
The move for a booze-free zone follows the approval by councillors in a bid to crack down on drunken and yobbish behaviour.
Anyone caught drinking alcohol in the zone, which includes streets, car parks and public spaces, will have their drink confiscated and could face prosecution.
The scheme includes Billericay High Street, Laindon Road, Sun Street, Chapel Street, Western Road, Radford Way and Mountnessing Road, as well as the Woolworth's and Waitrose car parks.
It was given the seal of approval by members of Basildon Council's general purposes committee and will come into effect as soon as legal notices have been issued.
