Fire crews were called to Wimpole Road, Colchester, at 2.30am after the blaze began in one of the houses. Smoke was seen billowing out of the house when fire crews arrived.
It was believed at first that someone was trapped in a blazing house. Eight firefighters, using breathing apparatus, forced entry into the home, but no-one was found inside.
Sub-officer Paul Ebsworth, of Colchester fire station, said while the crews were inside a gas leak was found and they had to shut the supply off.
The cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious.
