The nine passengers were travelling along the Southend-bound carriageway of the A13 on Saturday evening when their minibus hit a car, which had broken down in the slow lane.
The van was sent careering off the road and landed on its side. All passengers escaped with nothing but cuts and bruises.
Firefighters had to cut the driver out of the mangled wreckage and he was taken to Basildon Hospital with minor injuries.
The accident happened at the Orsett Cock junction at about 5.15pm.
