A national heritage group has opposed the proposed building of a warehouse in Mistley's conservation area.
English Heritage thinks Edme's plans to build a new storage building will jeopardise The Green.
James Ross, historic areas advisor, contacted Tendring Council to say the warehouse would have a negative impact on six listed homes there.
He wrote: "I am of the opinion that the character of this part of Mistley Conservation Area would be jeopardised by the intrusion of a modern industrial building and therefore cannot support this application.
Edme maltings wants to construct a warehouse with plastic-coated cladding. Planning officers have recommended the plan is approved by Tendring Council on Tuesday.
Residents opposed to the idea were on Friday due to meet North Essex MP Bernard Jenkin about the issue.
