Security is to be stepped up at a Frinton school after a caretaker was threatened by an intruder at the site.
The teenager, who was first spotted in the office at Tendring Technology College, said he would use a knife if he was prevented from making his escape.
The caretaker had tried to close the school gates in a bid to stop the youngster getting away on his mountain bike.
Vice-principal Alan Osborn said it was a very nasty incident, especially as it happened about 7.30am while it was still quite dark.
"Whether the intruder actually produced a knife or just threatened to does not really make much difference," he said. "The caretaker is not a young man and it was quite a shock for him."
