Lifeboat crews showed off the skills of a new hovercraft which could be in service in Southend by the summer.

The demonstration was performed in front of councillors to explain the unique advantages such a craft would bring to the seaside town.
The hovercraft floated over mudflats and performed sharp turns before the impressed crowd yesterday.
RNLI eastern region divisional inspector David Shepherd said it should be in service by May provided planning permission is granted for a shelter to house the craft.
